CSLB Public Records and California Public Records Act Requests

Guide to requesting CSLB complaint, investigation, email, enforcement and retention records under the California Public Records Act.

Documented Record

A California Public Records Act request asks an agency for identifiable existing records. It is most useful when it describes the subject, date range, people, offices, record types or case identifiers closely enough for the agency to search.

01

Write a focused request

Documented Record

A requester generally does not need to know the agency's internal file names, but concrete details can reduce ambiguity.

02

What a response means

Documented Record

A response saying no responsive records were found describes the result of the agency's search and wording of the request. It does not necessarily prove that an event never occurred. A withholding or redaction should be distinguished from a statement that no records were located.
